ASBESTOS AND PAH DIAGNOSTICS

Objectives of these diagnostics

These diagnostics for the presence of asbestos and PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) make it possible to define safe working conditions for construction site personnel during roadworks. They also help determine whether reclaimed asphalt can be partially recycled.

Asbestos was used until the mid-1990s in asphalt mixes to improve pavement strength. While it is not hazardous when encapsulated within the infrastructure, it becomes a health risk for workers carrying out roadworks. For this reason, since 2013, such analyses have been mandatory prior to any type of work.

Who is affected by asbestos-related issues?

During work planning, you—as contracting authorities, owners, or contractors—must ensure that all stakeholders are informed about asbestos-related risks on sites, structures, and road networks. These typically include municipalities, local infrastructure authorities, private motorway companies, and utility network operators.

Beyond roads, asbestos must also be investigated in private and public parking areas, truck rest areas, airport and airfield runways, as well as port quay surfaces. You must ensure that these areas are free from asbestos-containing materials in order to protect the health and safety of all workers and users.
